What to watch

Fruit, vegetables, flowers and fresh food need an unbroken cold chain with the correct temperature, humidity and, for some produce, controlled atmosphere. Sea reefers suit longer transit; air is used for highly perishable items.

The set-point, ventilation and humidity must be stated at booking; wrong set-points are a typical cause of claims.

Pre-cooling before loading is essential; reefers maintain temperature but do not cool warm cargo down.

Reefer plugs and monitoring at terminals should be covered in the booking.

Short shelf life makes demurrage and customs clearance time critical.
